Sea Area A3

What does Sea Area A3 mean in boating?

The Sea Area A3 is a maritime radio zone that covers regions beyond the reach of VHF and Medium Frequency (MF) radios. It is served by satellite communication, particularly via the INMARSAT system.
The A3 Sea Area encompasses nearly the entire globe, excluding polar regions, and is a key component of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). It ensures emergency communication and the reception of safety information in remote sea areas.

Practical tip:

Make sure your satellite communication equipment is fully operational. Test the system before departure and practice using Digital Selective Calling (DSC) for emergency calls in the A3 Area.
