Close reach course
What is a close reach course in sailing?
A close reach course is a sailing course where the boat sails at an angle of 45° to 89° to the apparent wind. Depending on the boat's design and sail trim, angles as narrow as 30° may be possible. When a boat sails as close to the wind as possible without the sails starting to luff, it is referred to as "close-hauled."
This course is critical for beating, as it allows the boat to progress tacking against the wind in a zigzag pattern.
A close reach course requires precise sail trim and steering, as small errors can quickly lead to a loss of speed.
Practical tip:
Stay focused and maintain a steady course. Regularly check the airflow over your jib using the telltales to ensure optimal propulsion.
